To finish off the term, nursery have been learning about mini beasts. We started off our topic by completing a work shop with Northumbrian wild life trust. We were able to explore mini beasts in investigation jars. We looked at honey bees, spiders, dragonflies and butterfly cocoons. We counted how many legs the animals had and sang songs that we knew about mini beasts. This inspired us to complete a mini beast hunt outside. Nursery were very considerate of the animals, we know not to stand on them and to be careful if we are picking them up. Within the provision, nursery have been practicing their subitising skills by playing number track games with dice. We had to work really hard to communicate with our peers and take turns. We also have loved using Purple Mash to create pictures of butterflies, we especially liked that it helped us to paint symmetrical butterfly wings. To further develop our computing skills we helped make a bug hotel for all the mini beasts in our garden. When completing this task we worked collaboratively to collect the resources and started our early computing skills by ‘tinkering’ to solve problems which arose. We have been developing our fine motor muscles by using tweezer to collect ‘worms’ from the mud and we used hole punches to create holes in leaves like caterpillars.
