French

Statement of Intent

At Barley Mow Primary School, we are keen to promote the study of a foreign language in depth (French), and to develop interest and a positive attitude to learning languages in general. Learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment. Children learn to appreciate different countries, cultures and communities and people. We are conscious that the ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.

Our school bases the core work in French around the National Curriculum which aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
