As part of our Science week activities, Reece from the Street Scientists team , who is a student at Newcastle University, came into school and shared an assembly with our children in Years 1 – 6 about the story of Earth.
He showed the children, using ropes, the distance of the planets in the solar system from the Sun and used dry ice within a balloon to show how carbon dioxide changes to a gas. The children were amazed as the balloons inflated in front of their eyes!
Using fairy liquid, a catalyst and hydrogen peroxide, he created dinosaur toothpaste and showed the children what the atmosphere would have been like when the meteor hit the Earth (using dry ice and boiling water) which caused the dinosaurs to become extinct.
Finally, he shared how too much carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere traps the heat which causes global warming.
