This week we have been learning all about winter and the changes which happen at this time of year. We started off by observing the changes which have happened outside in our nursery garden. We noticed that all the leaves on the trees and bushes had fallen off and there weren’t any pears on the trees! We discussed about how the weather felt on our skin and appropriate clothes we might wear in these weather conditions. We talked about what we used to wear in the summer and how these clothes would not be suitable for winter. Then we started looking at different places in the world that may be cold, we used a globe to understand where these may be, we loved exploring the globe and finding England. Nursery then worked super hard to build their own igloos. At first this was tricky and we had to use our problem solving skills to decide that using a structure such as a bowl would support us with this task. We were very resilient throughout and tried different methods to overcome problems, this helped us to practice our early computing skills. Within the provision we have been strengthening our fine motor muscles by moving objects in winter sensory bags and using scissors to create snowflakes. We enjoyed making snowmen in the playdough and decorating them with accessories. When outside nursery worked very hard with their throwing and aiming skills to throw balls at the snowmen bricks. We loved listening to lots of winter based stories such as ‘The Snow Thief’ and ‘Lost in the Snow’.
