Reception have had a very busy week learning all about different celebrations. We started exploring Bonfire night and why we use fireworks and bonfires to remember a man called Guy Fawkes, who lived hundreds of years ago and attempted to blow up a very important building, called The Houses of Parliament. We made paintings using different tools, including forks and rollers to spread the paint around to make a representation of fireworks. We also used black card and chalk to make other effective fire work pictures and outside we used natural resources to make a bonfire. Reception also really enjoyed learning about Diwali, which is also called The Festival of Light. We were very lucky to have a special visitor from a Hindu Temple come in and tell us the story of Rama and Sita, which is why Diwali is celebrated. Our visitor also explained about what happens during this special celebration and spoke to us about the country India, where this festival began. Reception also had the chance to try on Saris, Kaftans and Turbans, which is traditional clothing in India. Reception have been busy making Rangoli patterns in playdough and paint, which is a sign of good luck in Hinduism. We also made Mendi patterns on hand cut outs, as during Diwali people decorate their hands by putting beautiful patterns on themselves. Reception also made biscuits and decorated them with icing and sprinkles to make them look like fireworks, as during Diwali and Bonfire night, fireworks are a very important part of the celebration.
