Year 3 have been learning about different Jewish festivals in our RE lessons. To help us learn about the festival of Purim, we watched a video to find out the different ways Jewish children prepared for the celebration. Their preparations included choosing fancy dress costumes for the parade at their school and making goody bags to give presents to their friends. We also watched the children make groggers which are special noise makers. These are taken to the Synagogue and when the story of Queen Esther is read, the Jewish children shake their groggers really loudly when the name of the villain, Haman, is read out.
We made our own groggers and then listened to the story of Purim. When we heard Haman’s name being said aloud, we shook our groggers loudly to drown out the sound of the villain’s name. It was really good fun!
