Nursery have loved learning about mini- beasts this term. We have been looking at where mini-beats live and what they like to eat. We couldn’t believe worms eat mud! We have been practicing moving our bodies like different bugs and searching for mini- beasts in our outdoor area, developing our gross motor muscles. We strengthened our fine motor skills by cutting out leaves and using a hole punch to create holes in the leaf (pretending to be caterpillars), rescuing the mini-beasts with the tweezers and finding ‘worms’ in soil. Nursery loved making bird feeders to take home and hang on their tree to be able to observe birds at home. We then all made ‘mini-beast explorer’ hats and set out on an adventure in the garden. We found animals such as slugs, ladybirds, snails and spiders. We enjoyed looking at them closely with a magnifying glass. We know that we need to be kind the mini-beasts by being gentle when touching them and not using our loud voices when we are observing them. We have been developing our understanding about mini-beasts in our continuous provision. In our maths area we have been counting the bugs, matching the numeral and then writing how many bugs have been found. We have been following instructions in our playdough area to create bugs. We have been using paint to create pictures of mini- beasts and learning that if we fold the paper it will transfer the pain onto the other side. As well this we have been practicing our subitising skills in the small world by rolling the dice and moving the mini-beasts along the number track.
