The children in Year 3 have been learning about the Birtley Belgians and the impact they had on supporting the First World War as part of their history lessons for Spring term. They have enjoyed seeing old photographs as evidence of The National Projectile Factory which was based in Birtley but managed by Belgians alongside barracks where the soldiers would stay. We had two visitors from the Birtley Heritage Group who were able to give some more details and information linking to this part of our local history. The children could identify where certain things were in Birtley and what has replaced it today. Year 3 were excellent at sharing some facts they already knew as well as asking questions to find out more.
