We have noticed that the Moon changes shape in the night sky but we know that the Moon itself doesn’t actually change shape. In our science lesson, we have been finding out why this is. We learned that the Moon doesn’t make its own light and the ‘moonlight’ we see, is actually the Sun’s light reflected on the Moon’s surface. So, as the Moon orbits the Earth, the Sun lights up different parts of it, making it seem as if the moon is changing shape. The different shapes of the lit part of the moon that is visible from Earth are known as the Moon phases.

We used Oreo cookies to make a model of the phases of the moon. Then we enjoyed eating our cookies when we had finished!
