The children in Nursery and Reception were lucky enough to have a visit from Mel from Northumbria University. Mel introduced our nustem session focusing on being a marine engineer. We learned that we need to be curious, creative and resilient when completing our tasks. Mel read us a story all about a boat and how the more animals that got in the heavier the boat got and it eventually sank! Our task was to pick objects and make predictions about them deciding if they would sink or float. We each picked an object and tested it in the water. We used some super language when explaining our results including; light, heavy, big and small. Mel then stayed for a parent workshop where some of our children worked with their grown ups to make a boat using tin foil. They then tested it using coins or washers to see how many would fit in their boat before it would sink.
