Year 6 have been researching what life was like for the millions of soldiers who fought during World War One.  Life in the trenches involved terror, disease and the constant threat of shellfire and death.

We studied war poems by Siegfried Sassoon, an English poet, who bravely fought on the Western Front. One of his poems, ‘A Working Party’ described the horrors of the trenches and identified the emotional trauma soldiers encountered. Using our knowledge of poetic techniques and powerful vocabulary, we worked in groups to create our own poems which capture the challenges soldiers faced.
